What is air duct cleaning? Air duct cleaning is the systematic removal of the filth which resides within the heating and air conditioning ductwork. The process is performed by attaching a very large truck mounted vacuum to the system. While the vacuum is sucking the dirt out, cleaning nozzles are being strategically run from each register back through the ductwork to break loose the dirt and debris which is inside the ducts. Without scrubbing/agitating the interior of the ductwork the vacuum alone will only remove a small portion of the dirt.
Why should homeowners have their air ducts cleaned? Our HVAC heating and air conditioning ducts are the lungs of our homes. All of the air that we breathe flows through the system numerous times each day. Standard filters only capture a small percent of the particulate matter that comes into contact with them. Therefore, much of the dust and dirt is blown back into the home, into the air that we breathe. The dirt that settles down in the ducts creates a breeding ground for molds, mildew and other harmful elements to cultivate. These spores which are smaller than normal dust particles are then introduced into the air that we breathe. Studies by the EPA indicate that in many cases the indoor air quality of your home may be 10 times more contaminated than the outdoor air of our largest cities.
How much dirt and debris is in my ductwork? It depends on many variables. A new home will typically have a large quantity of construction debris (drywall dust, sawdust, wood chips, as well as Styrofoam cups, paper and much more). After a home has been lived in, dead bugs, spiders, hair, cloth fibers, pet hair, dander and normal household dust and dirt begin to accumulate with the existing debris within the system.
What is the best time to have my air ducts cleaned? There is no one best time, but a couple of ideal times to have your system cleaned are before you move into your home, and when you are replacing your furnace. Of course, if you've never had your system cleaned, now is a great time! Who knows what is in the ductwork from previous owners? We have seen varieties of rodent and insect poisons (as well as the actual pests) in air ducts! This is a very undesirable situation. As the air is blown over the poison it is introduced into the air that we breathe.
How often should air ducts be cleaned? The frequency of cleaning your system depends largely on the lifestyle of the home and how clean you want your indoor air. The lifestyle of your home refers to the type of activity that it is subjected to. That is, how much traffic is generated within the dwelling, how many people, pets, etc. are living in the home. An average home should be cleaned every 2 to 5 years to maintain a clean and healthy environment. Some people who suffer with asthma and other respiratory problems have their air ducts cleaned annually.
What is the cost of air duct cleaning? The cost of duct cleaning varies from home to home. Small homes of 1,000 to 1,200 sq. ft. start at around $300. The cost for an average home is approximately $450 which if amortized over a 3 to 5 year period of time makes air duct cleaning a very reasonable investment (less than $10.00 per month) particularly when you consider the benefits. Clean air and a healthy home environment for you and your family are priceless.
Why have I only recently heard about this valuable service? Air duct cleaning has been around for over 50 years but not highly visible in this area. As people are becoming more and more aware of the hazards that poor indoor air quality poses and the beneficial effects of air duct cleaning, the service is becoming much more common.
How does Quality Air determine estimates for air duct cleaning? Over the years Ken Clendenning has developed a series of questions that allows him to provide an estimate right over the phone. Many other companies must make a visit to your home, and some just simply quote a price based on the number of registers that your home has. There are several factors that need to be known about your home in order to provide you with an appropriate estimate.
